Built first and foremost to accommodate the college's growing student body, Goucher's new residence hall also reflects innovative thinking about how to merge the living and learning environments on campus. The building features suite-and apartment-style living spaces, plus common areas where students can come together to study, eat, screen films, hold meetings, or talk; a classroom available for classes and informal gatherings; and faculty apartments for housing visiting scholars. Goucher expects to break ground on the Athenaeum, a new flagship building at the heart of the campus, in 2007. At its core will be a new, technologically superior library housing the college's substantial print and multimedia holdings, its outstanding special collections, and a variety of spaces for individual and group reading, research, and study. The Athenaeum will also encompass an open forum designed to accommodate performances, lectures, and other public events; a secure art gallery; exercise spaces and equipment; a cafe; a center for community service and multicultural programs; the Goucher student radio station; and an open-air piazza for events of all kinds. Designed with Goucher's commitment to ecological sustainability in mind, the building will feature two green roofs and a variety of energy-saving features, and its landscaping will employ innovative approaches to managing stormwater and reducing its deleterious effects.
